Raven Throne Biaskoncy snieh času / Niazhasnaje ep review


Raven Throne is an atmospheric black metal band from Northern Belarus. Formed in 2004, the band is still eternally influenced by the cold winter and mystical, unseen worlds. Biaskoncy snieh času / Niazhasnaje is a compilation of a single and two additional tracks. They are a phenomenal and intense band. Schooled well on the old school traits of Mayhem and Darkthrone with a bit of early Gorgoroth for good measure, with their own modern spin in a way that works wonderfully.


The intro  Viartannie starych viatroŭ starts us out with a slow dark guitar riff with pouring rain, setting the mood. My - vosieni vartaŭniki starts off with such a powerful riff, like your staring down at a portal to hell, looking down smiling before you leap. The vocals are strong, similar to that of Gaahl and Hat thrown together. Absolute perfection. Better than 95% of any recent bands in the black Imetal genre. There's some light synth that ads a nice layer to their incredible, theatrics sound almost.
Biaskoncy snieh času starts of with a  soft riff that builds and explodes into hell fire. Then it slows down with a barely distorted guitar to play a riff that is absolutely amazing. Reminiscent of the early Gorgoroth albums, the spirit of darkness is surely present in these dudes. Cascading guitar lines, painting the darkest, bleakest picture you can sonically.
I  begins with a dreary sound almost psychedelic vibe creating a unsettling atmosphere. Fog permeates over the altar for sacrifice, and it builds up speed nicely. Almost trance like. Then the vocals come and have the power of a razor to a throat. It slows down very quiet and sinister. Some almost Judas priest like riffs sometimes. Rather than try to rip your head off, it has intellect. These guys literally put you in a dark trance.
II ends the ep with some strange ambient guitar work that is phenomenal. It slowly starts to build, like you are astral projecting to a dark world full of nothingness. When it kicks in, there's a over vibe of dread, but you aren't going down without a fight. Amazing.
This ep is a phenomenal piece of atmospheric black metal. In a genre littered with copies and absolutely shit bands ahem dimmu borgir. These dudes are trve kvlt.

Sadartha's third release is the ep Growth. With slightly better production than the last two albums, the band drops most of the hardcore punk influences going for a pure grunge sound. Opening track Emptifull has a sweet groove in the verse and explodes on the chorus. The band seems to have found their footing hear. Jangly muddy guitars, pulsating bass, and frantic but precise drums. Is it 1992 again? Aconitum starts with a watery sounding guitar riff. So slow and vibey. This is like Nirvana's Nevermind meets Alice In Chain's Jar Of Flies. So dark, so sublime.  Eclipsing Binaries sounds upbeat.a lazy day with a joint in the sun with nothing to do is what comes to mind. Really good song. Nice melodies. These dudes are definitely on the rise and just get better. Sacred Scorcher has such an awesome groove. Hearing a little Mudhoney influence here. Then the guitars distort and it's a train barrelling down the tracks at 110 mph on fire. It's fucking great.  ...

Sunn0)) Life Metal Review

Sunn0)) is either band you love or hate, and their latest album Life Metal is pure droney goodness. The empowering yet dark ambient vibes suck your soul and stir it around through these four long epic pieces of pure sonic art. Reclrded and mixed by Steve Albini, their eighth record is pure drone. And an album title that is a contrast to 'doom and gloom', one of my favourite albums this year. This album has a maternal twin album coming called Pyroclasts soon. Between Sleipnir's Breaths starts off the journey. Haunting vocals by Hildur Guðnadóttir, fantastic. Life Metal comparatively more upbeat tone with brightness and a symphonic vibe compared to the rest of Sunn O)))'s discography that stems in part from Anderson and O'Malley being content with their personal and creative lives. Its still fucking heavy mind you, just less hopelessness. Troubled Air comes next on this journey of ambience. You can feel the morning sun peeking through dark ancient clouds. Won...

Dee Calhoun Dream Within A Dream review

Dee Calhoun’s upcoming EP A Dream Within a dream creates a dark, tranquil world with deathly cold atmospheres; it’s a voice of anguish and horror in a world that’s gone mad with this Covid 19. A diy project done by ex Iron Man current Spiral Grave singer that is not to be overlooked. The title track is first and it is a musical adaptation of the Poe poem, beautiful, medieval, melancholic, isolating, and ethereal. The atmospheres and different symphonic elements just enhance the despondent isolating mood that flows through the rest of this EP. At The Altar of Venus has a similarity vibe to Planet Caravan by Black Sabbath, that peaceful hazy spacey vibe, which ties into the desolate vibes to this album as well, there is such an atmosphere of gloom it is not overwhelming but almost like a tenderness with the despair.  Arm in Arm with the Angels of Darkness is the most upbeat song with a nice bluesy riff and acoustic percussion that just rolls man, while maintaining this...
